Finding quality vintage tinplate vehicles and mechanical toys is considerably more difficult now than was the case some twenty years ago.

You will find reproductions everywhere and the unscrupulous trader will try to pass them off as genuine antques. The condition of the toy and box can give the item away, so look very carefully to see wear on the item that is condusive to years of use or storage. There will wear to corners of boxes, possibly some fading of the colours, the odd piece of tape, tears and old price tags or remnants of them. Penciled prices are sometimes faked!

Look for the makers mark - Hong Kong was exporting way back in the 1950's era, as was the American Zone in Germany.

In fact - be very, very carefull when buying, especially through the internet - the word 'Vintage' is only a word! The proof is in the seeing!!!!!

LESNEY, DINKY, SPOT ON and CORGI Die Cast models.

Remember those wonderful Christmas or Birthday occassions where a parcel was ripped open and a wonderful model of a car or lorry fell out, ready to be played with? Well they are not forgotten and today those wonderful toys realise serious money - so long as they are perfect and still in their box, which also is perfect!!!!! Some chance of having one like that, but for those of us who have to make do with se3cond best there always are some models on the market that are good enough to collect. Go to a boot fair and there will beboxes of toys all thrown into a big heap. Be careful!!! If they have been thrown in, then they are ready to be thrown out!!

Look at any model with care - note any paint loss and decide whether it is more than 50% gone! Look for broken edges - many a toy looks all there but really is missing important pieces. Make sure it has not been repainted!!!!!!! If you like it - then buy it!!!!
